Windows – Print Directory Listing

One feature that people seem to like to do is print out the a directory content listing. By default, Windows doesn’t have this feature enabled. Microsoft has a nice utility program to fix this though. Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321379 for their quick fix. Once installed, all you have to do is right click on the directory and choose ‘Print Directory Listing’.

iPhone Development with Flash is back!

The Packager for iPhone, which is a feature of Adobe Flash® Professional CS5 software and the Adobe AIR SDK 2.0.1 was not approved by Apple a while back. This was very unfortunate, as there a lot of people that can write some great applications for iPhone using action script/Flash.

However about a month ago, on September 09, Apple announced: “We are relaxing restrictions on what development tools can be used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting applications do not download any code” and updated their iOS Developer Program License Agreement. This means that applications created with Flash Professional CS5 and Adobe AIR SDK 2.0.1 now can be approved for the App Store.

WordPress 3.0.1 is now available for download. This version fixes around 50 small issues. So if your running an older version of WordPress, it always a good idea to upgrade.

Backup and Sync Files Online – Dropbox

I have been using Dropbox for quite sometime now for small online backups and data syncing. You can get a free account of 2GB disk space. So if you working on projects with the laptop while traveling and when you get back home, your main computer will have the updated files. It adds a folder just like mydocuments and files you put in the dropbox folder are automatically synced.

Screencasting – Jing

So your interested in creating a screencast or just wanting to show someone how to do something on the computer via a video. We use TechSmith Camtasia Studio, which is very good for screencasting. The drawback for some people is the cost. So if you don’t need all the fancy features of Camtasia Studio and just need to create a simple how-to video, then you can get their free software called Jing.

Latest books to our Library

We updated our library this month with the latest books on Visual Basic 2010, iPhone Development, and WordPress. I have not had a chance to dig into the Visual Basic 2010 books yet, but usually the Mastering and Unleashed series are the best in my opinion. We are fairly new to the iPhone development and has somewhat of a unique learning curve compared to developing for Windows Mobile. I have been using Windows Mobile HTC phones for years now, but I finally switched over to iPhone, with no regrets as far as the iPhone goes. Will be evaluating the Sprint EVO and iPhone 4 in the near future. We probably have every intermediate to advance WordPress book that is available, and adding Wrox’s Professional WordPress to our collection was a good buy. I am always picking up on new ideas or ways to improve the functionality of WordPress.

iPhone review, matched to HTC Touch Pro/2

Its has been a little over 2 months now with me using the iPhone 3GS. All I can say is great phone, period. Is it better than the Windows Mobile 6+ HTC Touch Pro/2? Yes, for the main reason of it simply works. I think the HTC is a very powerful phone, if not more powerful than the iPhone, but for the average user, its harder to just get things done, quickly and easily. It sure would be nice if Sprint picked up the iPhone, for the areas I work in, Sprint has a slightly better coverage area. For developing applications, I prefer Windows Mobile, as that is my background. Learning iPhone development software xCode, Cocoa Touch, etc., has been a challenge, but after a few weeks, I am starting to get the hang of it. So there is no clear winner, but at this exact point in time, I chose the iPhone. Now come June, when Sprint rolls out the EVO 4G phone, it might just change my mind again.

New software for 2010 – Visual Studio and Adobe CS5

Well I have been using the final release of Visual Studio 2010 for about a week now on a Windows 7 64bit platform and no issues so far. Have upgraded a few projects from VS2008 and all worked fine. Really like the breakout window feature. For my development setup, I use two ethernet ports. Finding a USB to ethernet adapter was a little time consuming, but the Trendnet works fine with the 64 bit setup, unlike the Belkin which did not work with the 64 bit platform. Tested the .net Logix version 2 software and all worked ok via the ethernet adapter. Upcoming test will be a USB to Serial port adapter and talking to some RS232 secondary devices and will also be testing the .net ID Automation forms control. The other software is Adobe CS5, in particular, Photoshop and Dreamweaver. One of the best new features for Photoshop is the new selection tools. It works a lot better than CS4. In Dreamweaver CS5, it now supports 3rd party content management frameworks. I tested it with WordPress and it worked great and was able to do live previews right within Dreamweaver! The big question is do you upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 and Adobe Cs5, and it all depends on your goals and needs. If you want the latest and greatest development tools, then its a must have.
