Wordpress 3.0.1 is now available for download. This version fixes around 50 small issues. So if your running an older version of Wordpress, it always a good idea to upgrade.

Backup and Sync Files Online – Dropbox

I have been using Dropbox for quite sometime now for small online backups and data syncing. You can get a free account of 2GB disk space. So if you working on projects with the laptop while traveling and when you get back home, your main computer will have the updated files. It adds a folder just like mydocuments and files you put in the dropbox folder are automatically synced.

Screencasting – Jing

So your interested in creating a screencast or just wanting to show someone how to do something on the computer via a video. We use TechSmith Camtasia Studio, which is very good for screencasting. The drawback for some people is the cost. So if you don’t need all the fancy features of Camtasia Studio and just need to create a simple how-to video, then you can get their free software called Jing.

We updated our library this month with the latest books on Visual Basic 2010, iPhone Development, and Wordpress. I have not had a chance to dig into the Visual Basic 2010 books yet, but usually the Mastering and Unleashed series are the best in my opinion. We are fairly new to the iPhone development and has somewhat of a unique learning curve compared to developing for Windows Mobile. I have been using Windows Mobile HTC phones for years now, but I finally switched over to iPhone, with no regrets as far as the iPhone goes. Will be evaluating the Sprint EVO and iPhone 4 in the near future. We probably have every intermediate to advance Wordpress book that is available, and adding Wrox’s Professional Wordpress to our collection was a good buy. I am always picking up on new ideas or ways to improve the functionality of Wordpress.

iPhone review, matched to HTC Touch Pro/2

Its has been a little over 2 months now with me using the iPhone 3GS. All I can say is great phone, period. Is it better than the Windows Mobile 6+ HTC Touch Pro/2? Yes, for the main reason of it simply works. I think the HTC is a very powerful phone, if not more powerful than the iPhone, but for the average user, its harder to just get things done, quickly and easily. It sure would be nice if Sprint picked up the iPhone, for the areas I work in, Sprint has a slightly better coverage area. For developing applications, I prefer Windows Mobile, as that is my background. Learning iPhone development software xCode, Cocoa Touch, etc., has been a challenge, but after a few weeks, I am starting to get the hang of it. So there is no clear winner, but at this exact point in time, I chose the iPhone. Now come June, when Sprint rolls out the EVO 4G phone, it might just change my mind again.

New software for 2010 – Visual Studio and Adobe CS5

Well I have been using the final release of Visual Studio 2010 for about a week now on a Windows 7 64bit platform and no issues so far. Have upgraded a few projects from VS2008 and all worked fine. Really like the breakout window feature. For my development setup, I use two ethernet ports. Finding a USB to ethernet adapter was a little time consuming, but the Trendnet works fine with the 64 bit setup, unlike the Belkin which did not work with the 64 bit platform. Tested the .net Logix version 2 software and all worked ok via the ethernet adapter. Upcoming test will be a USB to Serial port adapter and talking to some RS232 secondary devices and will also be testing the .net ID Automation forms control. The other software is Adobe CS5, in particular, Photoshop and Dreamweaver. One of the best new features for Photoshop is the new selection tools. It works a lot better than CS4. In Dreamweaver CS5, it now supports 3rd party content management frameworks. I tested it with Wordpress and it worked great and was able to do live previews right within Dreamweaver! The big question is do you upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 and Adobe Cs5, and it all depends on your goals and needs. If you want the latest and greatest development tools, then its a must have.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G

Well I was waiting on the HTC HD2 phone to come to the Sprint network. Looks like T-Mobile got the HD2. I was also wanting the Windows Mobile 7 software. So Sprint and HTC comes out with the Supersonic phone, HTC EVO 4G. The only disappointment for me is, its not Windows Mobile 7. The main reason that is a disappointment for me, is that my current applications are written for Windows Mobile PC. So now I will have to start learning the Google Android or wait for another phone. I am leaning towards of pre-ordering the new Sprint HTC EVO 4G phone, and start moving my applications over to the Android world. The phone itself in my opinion is the best out there hands down, although the Apple IPhone 4G may be a winner also. The specifications on the HTC EVO 4G phone is more powerful than some peoples home computers. It has a very fast processor and superb 4.3″ screen. Has an 8 mega pixel camera and a front facing camera also for video conferencing. Also allows multiple devices to use the net connection from the phone. There are a lot of possibilities with this phone! I get asked if people should upgrade from their current HTC phones, and usually I say no, as I tell them they haven’t even used 1/2 the features of their current phone!

Twitter in the workplace? Oh no, could this be wrong or disastrous? Well we have developed something similar to Twitter for the workplace. Here is how it works, let’s say you run a fast pace small business. A lot of meetings for groups of people take time and are usually wasting resources for some of the people as things may not pertain to them. Although a team meeting is good, there is a better way! BusinessTweet allows a manager or team leader to keep track of what his team members are doing and latest updates on their projects. This also allows the team to collaborate more easily with other team members. Here is an example, I am asking everyone if they have seen Steve, after about 5 minutes looking for him, I find that he had to leave early. Well this could have been easily seen on the BusinessTweet dashboard. One last example, I BusinessTweet that I’m struggling on this Excel formula, everyone sees that and someone replies with the answer. Also this information is saved in the database, so future similar issues are easily displayed as you type your question. So see, BusinessTweet may not be so bad after all!
